Modern building and insulating materials are a "game changer" when it comes to constructing a solid replacement roof over your existing conservatory.

Due to the technological advancement in producing lightweight components it is now possible to improve your old inefficient conservatory roof, with it's noisy polycarbonate roof sheets, that makes your conservatory too hot in the summer, and too cold in the winter!

Triple Glazing – is it really worth the extra outlay?

Triple-glazed windows are more expensive than double-glazed windows. They are thicker and heavier, putting more strain on the hinges of opening sashes. Also, the more panes of glass that are fitted, the more obscured will be the view out. Insulation: better – but not that much better. Less of the sun’s heat will pass into the room through a triple-glazed window unit. This might be desirable in summer but it also means that you’ll benefit less from solar gain – e.g. after cool

    Window trends for 2020

We think that the popularity of these residential product categories will continue to rise this year. Aluminium windows With their slimline frames, aluminium windows give an elegant minimal look. Aluminium windows are particularly suited to houses where the original windows were steel framed, or for any home that would benefit from a clean modern aesthetic. Sightlines

Searching for window products online, you’ll soon come across manufacturers boasting of a particular product offering ‘reduced sightlines’ or, perhaps, the even more vague ‘superior sightlines’. What are these ‘sightlines’? Combining fixed sashes with opening sashes on a window unit usually means that the upper and lower glazing lines are uneven – because the opening sashes have a smaller glazed area. Equal sightlines are aesthetically desirable on many houses. The effect can

    Window bays and bows

A bay window is a composite of window units, usually consisting of a large centre unit and two flanking units set at angles toward the house wall. Bay windows add space and give a larger glazed area, increasing the amount of light entering a room. Bay windows on a 2-storey bay fronted house A bow window is a bay window but with the window units set in a radial formation, giving a curved appearance. This is sometimes referred to as a bow-bay window. An oriel window is a bay wi

    Rehau Rio flush casement windows

We’re delighted with this new range of Rehau-profile flush casement windows. Despite being easier on the wallet than some competitor products in the timber-replacement window market, they look superb – and the quality shines through. Admiral Windows fitted Rio flush casements to the front elevation of this bay-fronted Oxford house. Finished in an attractive white woodgrain, the new windows were specified with ‘A’ rated glass (argon filled) for top energy-saving performance. S

    Seeing double

We’ve just fitted new windows to this pair of bay-fronted houses in Cowley. The job was for an existing customer – last year, we installed matching Visage Cottage-range composite doors to each house. Black on the outside and white on the inside, the Visage composite doors are complemented by matching unglazed side panels and Rehau profile toplights that are fitted with Contora pattern glass. These fine houses each have two-faceted oriel bays on the first floor in addition to

Kiln Lodge – a ghost story for Halloween

Somewhere on the edge of town, a telephone rang in a windowless office. Bob lifted the receiver. ‘Good afternoon, Excelsior Windows?’ he said. ‘Hello, is that the glazier?’ It was a bad line and the voice was faint. It sounded like the voice of an old lady. Excelsior did indeed carry out window replacements. Was it a double-glazed window? ‘A what, dear? No, no, I do not think so,’ said the voice. ‘It is a bay window. Very old. It is all broken. Terribly broken. Can you help m

Safety glass – the why, the what and the where.

Safety glass protects people from injury caused by glass breakage. UK building regulations stipulate that safety glass must be fitted in ‘critical locations’. Critical locations are defined as: Glazing in doors – glass which is wholly or partially within 1500 mm from floor level. Glazing adjacent to doors – windows and side-panels that are wholly or partially within 300 mm of the edge of a door and which is also wholly or partially within 1500 mm from floor level, must be saf

New windows – achieving a premium look at an affordable price

The Watlington cottage needed new windows. Its owner wanted to keep a traditional look but without spending the price premium that would be required for a set of flush casements. Admiral Windows has fitted new uPVC windows throughout the cottage. The new windows are smooth white inside while their exterior faces are foiled to give a grained cream colour. The result is a mellow look that is in harmony with the surrounding brickwork. Equal sightlines have been achieved by fitti

How to … clean your windows like a pro

Oh noes! How do you achieve the sparkling finish that would be becoming of a professional window cleaner? Questions and answers Q. What about cleaning the u-PVC frames? A. U-PVC frames should be washed using a weak solution of washing-up liquid in water. On white frames, non-abrasive

    Deceuninck Heritage Flush Casement Windows

A Woodstock resident wanted to replace their traditional casement windows with new double-glazed windows. These would need to retain the look of the original windows. Because their cottage fronts a busy main road, the new windows on the front elevation would need to be fitted with soundproofing glass. Alluring Aluminium

Because aluminium is such a strong material, aluminium window frames can be made slimmer than is possible with uPVC. The above picture of two ovolo-profile frame samples shows this difference clearly. The cream coloured uPVC frame on the right is decidedly chunkier than the white aluminium frame on the left. As well as being a leading local installer of uPVC windows, Admiral Windows Oxford offers a choice in aluminium framed windows, with various profiles available in the ful
