Should your new windows be specified with trickle vents? Keeping fresh air circulating inside a building deters mould and is better for human health. There can, however, be issues with draughts and noise transfer – and a window frame with holes in it will make the whole window less thermally efficient. Trickle vents are, of course, adjustable and can be kept closed – but do you actually need them? Most opening window sashes can be locked in a secure ‘night vent’ position.
The law requires that trickle vents (the simplest means of providing adjustable background ventilation) should be fitted:
on new windows where the existing windows being removed currently have them;
on windows that are being installed into an extension;
on windows that are being installed into a new-build home.
